Who I Built This For
I built this course for the teacher who has autistic students in her classroom this year and wants more than the surface-level overview her last in-service offered. The depth that makes the difference between managing students and actually reaching them.
I built it for the therapist whose caseload is shifting toward more autistic clients, and who wants a strong clinical foundation rather than a piecemeal collection of webinars.
I built it for the parent or caregiver whose child has just been diagnosed and who is drowning in conflicting information online — the parent who needs a thoughtful, research-grounded starting point rather than a thousand opinions.
I built it for the grandparent, the aunt, the uncle, the close family friend who wants to understand the autistic child they love, so they can show up for that child the way they want to.
If you recognize yourself in any of those descriptions, this course is for you.
What You'll Learn
Understanding Autism is the foundation course. It does not teach you to be a clinician or a specialist. It gives you the conceptual depth and the practical orientation to be more effective in whatever role you already occupy, as a teacher, therapist, parent, or caregiver.
By the end of this course, you'll be able to:
✓ Speak about autism through the lens of neurodiversity and the acceptance movement
✓ Recognize the universal signs of autism and understand why presentations vary so widely from one person to the next
✓ Explain the DSM-5 support-level framework (Levels 1, 2, and 3) and what “requires support” actually means in daily life
✓ Understand the realities of severe autism and the comprehensive care it calls for
✓ Navigate the language of autism with confidence — person-first versus identity-first — and understand why the autistic community's preferences matter
✓ Recognize how autism presents in adolescence, and why it is so often missed or diagnosed late in girls and women
✓ Apply this foundation to your specific context (classroom, clinic, home, or community)
What's Inside
Eight modules, designed to be taken in order. Most learners complete the course in about 75–80 minutes of total work.
Module 1: Understanding Autism — A New Perspective
Introduction and Neurodivergence
An introduction to the course, the autism-acceptance movement, the concept of neurodiversity, and the distinction between neurotypical and neurodivergent.
Approximate length: 8–10 minutes
Module 2: Recognizing Autism — Symptoms Across the Spectrum
Understanding Autism Symptoms
The universal signs of autism, how symptoms vary from person to person, well-known but less common presentations, and the symptoms autistic people share with their non-autistic peers.
Approximate length: 11–14 minutes
Module 3: Understanding Autism Supports
From Asperger's Syndrome to Level 1 and Level 2 ASD
How the DSM-5 replaced Asperger's syndrome with a support-based framework. What Levels 1 and 2 look like in daily life, and the meaningful difference between “requiring support” and “requiring substantial support.”
Approximate length: 8–9 minutes
Module 4: Severe Autism (Level 3) — Understanding High Support Needs
Level 3 Autism and Comprehensive Care
A clear-eyed look at severe autism: defining traits, the real challenges families and clinicians face, treatment options, and the support caregivers themselves need.
Approximate length: 4–5 minutes
Module 5: Words Matter — The Language of Autism
Person-First vs. Identity-First Language
Why language is not a side issue. Person-first and identity-first language, community preferences (including survey data showing 76% prefer “autistic person”), and what autistic voices themselves are telling us about the words we use.
Approximate length: 9–11 minutes
Module 6: Supporting Autistic Youth
Practical Guidance for the Adolescent Years
Practical guidance for the unique challenges of adolescence — physical changes, intellectual expectations, and social development — and what makes the teenage years particularly demanding for autistic young people.
Approximate length: 10–12 minutes
Module 7: Supporting Autistic Girls
Practical Guidance and Gender Differences
Why autism in girls and women is so often missed or diagnosed late. The different ways autism presents in females, masking and social compensation, and why recognizing these patterns matters for early intervention.
Approximate length: 10–12 minutes
Module 8: Conclusions
Wrapping Up the Course
A synthesis of what we've covered — from neurodiversity and support levels to gender differences and language — and a call to approaches that honor both the strengths and the challenges across the spectrum.
Approximate length: 5–6 minutes
